East Coast Laundry is proud to accept the Family Business Association Atlantic’s Family Business of the Year award. Peter Blunden was honoured to receive the award at last weeks Awards of Excellence Luncheon at the Brightwood Golf & Country Club.
Business has been a family affair since the late 1940s when Peter’s father George Blunden and grandfather Harry Blunden started Blunden Supplies. Peter started working there when he was just 13.
“All in the family were encouraged to work there” he said.
Peter and his wife Marge, established East Coast Laundry in 1985. The company was later amalgamated with Maritime Equipment Limited, which was started by Marge’s parents Ted and Cecile Latimer in 1972.
Peter said the key to the pandemic has been getting ahead of the global supply chain issues. He ended up buying large quantities of supplies just before issues started.
He also attributes the rebound to organizations such as the Family Business Association, the Canadian Federation of Independents Business, and the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, as they hosted seminars and promoted what government programs were available, as well as advice on how to survive the unprecedented times.
East Coast Laundry’s office is at 519 Herring Cove Road, and we also have service centers in New Brunswick and Newfoundland. We employ 12 people.
